Skypaint: A Pop Opera
Skypaint: A Pop Opera is a musical story concerning one man’s alienation and confusion in a rapidly transforming world that is finding humanity merging with technology. Jim Sullivan from the Boston Globe calls Skypaint: A Pop Opera "terrific: immediately infectious, hard-rocking, and heartfelt. ‘Skypaint’ may just be the best rock [or pop] opera by a small-scale band’."
Skypaint debuted in November of 2002, consisting of an organization of 10 people, including musicians, singers, a set designer, sound person, and computer/visual media artist. The live performance of Skypaint was augmented by computer animation and text projected onto a screen. The first run at The Lizard Lounge was a huge success, selling out to an ecstatic crowd. Receiving accolades from the press, shows were performed at larger venues such as The Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge and the Iron Horse in Northampton.
What started out as a pop/rock opera has morphed into a theatrical work. The show's creator Russell Chudnofsky recently participated in a writer’s workshop sponsored by the New Opera and Musical Theatre Initiative entitled Birth of a Musical, in which he worked on his script with acclaimed playwright/director and Suffolk University professor Wes Savick playwright and director Jeffery Sweet. Chudnofskys is currently re-writing and re-recording Skypaint and plans on turning it into an animated film.
